This week, we dive deeper into the Christian obligation (yes, obligation) to practice hospitality and answer your questions about what that looks like when you’re tired, strapped for cash, and would rather just watch Netflix.
Casey, I really related to the business man bathroom story. At our previous home, which was in an apartment neighborhood (kind of like small condos) we were super friendly with our garbage truck and recycling truck men. We were out there in all weathers greeting them as they picked up our trash (my boys are little and LOVE the trash). One Monday morning one of the trash men came up and was in the same desperate situation. I invited him right in - to our crazy bathroom full of kids bath toys and pull -up boxes and stools …not perfect but it was definitely a moment of hospitality!
Great episode! Thanks for the encouragement in the area of hospitality! I’m glad you linked to the Post Gazette article. I was intrigued and shared it with my missionary community. Hospitality plays out in various ways, and even giving a cigarette to a homeless person can be an act of hospitality 😅 Ultimately it’s about receiving the person as they are and treating them with dignity.
I enjoyed this conversation. I struggle with hospitality at this point in my life because I have a husband who isn’t very interested in being hospitable and isn’t super helpful when I host people. So it’s more stressful for me to deal with his lack of enthusiasm. I don’t like feeling like I’m inconveniencing him. Also I’ve had family members be very rude when I’m being hospitable and take advantage of me. I’ve been starting to put up boundaries around having people over which family is shocked about and protests or doesn’t honor. So I’m really struggling to find a way to be hospitable while also taking care of myself. I used to host many more events when my daughter was young. Having Young children seems to be conducive to hosting events. I’d love to hear any responses that you have about any of this.
